Presenting to you from Leeds, is CORINNE BAILEY RAE, yes she is from the UK believe it or not. The first time I heard Corinne, I thought she was from some part of the states but she was actually brought up in a small town in Leeds by her West-Indian father and Yorkshire mother.
Corinne is 26 years old and releases her debut album, titled, CORINNE BAILEY RAE. Her voice is surface beautiful, she reminds me of Norah Jones but with a bit more R n' B in her voice. Corinne however sees herself more along the lines of Martina Topley-Bird.
Her debut singles - 'Put Your Records On', which I particularly like (and apparently the whole of UK too) and also 'Like A Star' have been quite successful at sailing to the top of the charts. It is fair to say, Corinne has taken the music industry by storm.
Songs on the album include:
Like A Star**** - Her second single released, a mellow track that has a very jazzy feel to it, I love this song, everything about it is just about right, from her voice to the guitars to the way the lyrics are written, which she did write herself, maybe that's why she knows how to hit each note just right.
Enchantment***- Also quite good but it takes about two or three times of listening to it before it grows on you and then you really like it. Just as the title implies the song is about how about falling under a love spell. I am not keen on the lyrics as it seems more about rythming than indepth words.
Put Your Records On***** - THE BEST SONG ON THE ALBUM HANDS DOWN. My favourite song, this is definitely going to be a Spring/Summer hit, the song is very dreamy, I love the words and the tune, this song makes you want to dance. It is one of those happy songs with happy lyrics. Try and catch the video to this song it is very good, good to see some investment in videos.
Till It Happens to You**** - This is a nice song, a love on the rocks kind of track. It is Jazz at its most organic roots, so if you like jazz or easy listening, you don't even need to read further this is the album for you.
Trouble Sleeping***** - 'Could it be?' I am inlove with this track, so so good is just not good enough, this song is exceptional and is on repeat, it is also the shortest song on the album. It reminds me of the song Nelly Furtado sang, 'I'm like a Bird' but this song here is about falling in love and pretending it is not happening or trying to fight the feeling.
Call Me When You Get This**** - This song is very old school/Skool and that is why I like it so much. It has a hustle kind of thing to it tooand the chorus is so different, this is a classic oldies tune.
Cheux Pastry Heart*** - There are a lot of mellow songs on this album. This is yet another slow song but not one of my favourites, but as the songs go on this album they grow on you. If you love mellow then this song is the closest you get to heaven.
Breathless**** - Change the beat, make it a bit faster, this reminds me of an old song from the 80s but I just can't put my hand on it, all I know is that it is a song that I liked. The saxophone is also exceptional and adds a lot of icicng on the cake.
I'd Like To**** - Very Indie Arie, Erykah Badu style of of music. You will definitely be singing along to the chorus and you don't need to know the words to do this.
Butterfly***** - ANOTHER OF MY FAVOURITES, SHOWER ME WITH YOUR LOVE, This song gets better each time I hear it. It gets you thinking, it is a song of appreciation of love given unconditionally. I love the chorus so so much, I hope she releases this as a single too as I'll like to get the instrumental.
Seasons Change*** - If you love Alicia Keys then you will definitely love this song, it reminds me of one of Alicia's songs, Jane Doe especially the beginning of the track, then again I am one of those people that has listened to so much music that they almost start to sound the same. Personally not one of my favourites but the chorus gives the song and extra star.
So what can I say?. Corinne's got a very good voice, it is soothing to the ears,it is very relaxing, matter of fact whenever I wake up and need to go back to bed her voice seems like a lullaby and takes me back to sleep. Her songs are very chill out and hard to classify under a specific genre, she delivers a mixture of different genres but with 40% jazz.
This is not Corinne's first time in the industry tough, she was once in an indie band called 'Helen', which unfortunately did not go far as one of the band member became pregnant and that was the end of 'Helen'. This time, Corinne is doing it on her on and is off to a good start. Her songs are in the jazz, soul, r n' b, genre and are well thought out, and beautifully sang.
The Final Verdict?
Corinne Bailey Rae, is who you need to remember and what you need to buy this month. Even though it is not your type of music I think you should gives this a try, come on to the other side. Think about it, how often do you buy a CD, listen to it and like it immediately? On a more serious note, I believe she will be breaking grounds in the States just as she has done here in the UK.
